Hey, Everybody! Why is your animation not smooth? Why do you lose a massive amount of nerves when animating a puppet? You, like me, did not know the little secrets of a stop-motion animator!

I did not know either, and I had to search on Google for a very long time to solve many issues related to improving the quality of my puppet animations. I have solved some of them and already started to apply them, but some solutions have not yet been used in practice. In any case, if you are faced with a great desire to increase the quality of your animation, you will find this helpful material.

And so the first is Surface Gage! This tool is not in my stop motion workshop, so I will use my rig and sharpened tips. This tool is used in the process of animation to fix the position of elements of the puppet's body in space and, when changing, to quickly restore the position. This is my interpretation of the technical purpose of Surface Gage, so if there is a more meaningful and scientific explanation, please share.

When using a Surface gage in stop-motion animation with puppets, it holds and positions the puppet's body parts. This ensures stability and precision of movement during filming, which is crucial for creating smooth and natural motion.

  1. Position fixation: The Surface gage can be used to fix a specific position of the puppet's body parts, such as arms or legs, to ensure consistent movement in each frame.
  2. Angle control: It can also help control the angles of tilt and rotation of various body parts, allowing for more realistic and expressive gestures and movements.
  3. Avoiding shaking: The Surface gage helps hold the puppet in the desired position without shaking or drifting, crucial for maintaining stability and control during filming.
  4. Size alignment: If necessary, the Surface gage can also be used to align the sizes of different puppet body parts to match specified proportions.

The second is fixing the feet of the Stickybones. This was a massive problem for me while animating Stikybones on a metal platform. I had high hopes for the magnets, but they failed me. Minimal movements are impossible to realize! In the end, after pulling out the magnets, I found holes, and using flathead metal screws and screwdrivers, I fixed the feet to the table. The problem was solved, and the tests showed that it worked!
