Noise Removal and Addition in Nuke: Step-by-Step Guide


When working with clean plates during cleanup in Nuke, mismatches can arise between the static noise of a clean plate and the dynamic noise of the original footage. This is especially noticeable when clean plates are composited over moving elements, leaving areas of inconsistent noise. To address this, it’s essential to remove the noise from the clean plate first and then reintroduce dynamic noise to ensure a seamless blend with the rest of the animation. In this step-by-step guide, I’ll walk you through the process of removing noise, adjusting it in RGB channels, and ensuring the final output looks polished and natural.

1. Preparation

  • We’ll use the scene from tutorial #3 as an example.

2. Removing Noise from the Clean Plate

  1. Add a Denoise node before the Rotonode to remove noise from the clean plate.
    • Select an area for noise sampling on the clean plate.

3. Setting Up Masks and Preparing Noise

  1. Add an Unpremult node after the Premult node to ensure proper image adjustments.
  2. Add an F_ReGrain node right after the Unpremult:
    • Connect the Grain arrow to the clean plate.
    • Select the same noise sampling area in F_ReGrain as you used in the Denoise node.
  3. Add a Premult node after F_ReGrain to restore the alpha channel.

4. Setting Up the Roto Mask and Test Render

  1. Create a temporary mask in the Roto node (without blurred edges) for testing purposes.
  2. Select a short animation render range for testing.

5. Adjusting Noise in RGB Channels

  1. Red Channel:
    • Increase the Exposure to better observe the noise.
    • Adjust the noise parameters to match the original video.
  2. Repeat the same process for the Green and Bluechannels:
    • Fine-tune the intensity and structure of the noise for each channel.

6. Finalizing the Workflow

  1. Remove the temporary mask created in the Roto node.
  2. Verify the final result, ensuring that the noise blends seamlessly into the animation and matches the dynamics of the original footage.
